Katarina Witt began ice skating at age five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent as she enrolled to a special school that caters to children who have a passion for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt placed second in the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of all and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic triumph Katarina Wit won gold in ice skating for women during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a fiercely competitive competition. After four years, her win, she managed to claim an additional competitive race. The free skate she took was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of her performances during both compulsory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt was the first woman ever since Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. While she did not win a single medal, she delighted fans with finishing seventh. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
